New paper claims over 100% of all man-made CO2 has to be removed from atmosphere to have a "safe" climate

A paper published today in Geophysical Research Letters finds on the basis of highly-flawed carbon cycle and climate models that even if all human emissions of CO2 were to cease, and a non-existent scheme devised to suck 115%-180% of all man-made CO2 emissions out of the atmosphere, it would require 1000 years for CO2 to return to a "safe" level. The paper appears to be the IPCC AR5 geo-engineering claim on steroids.
IPCC AR5: "CO2-induced warming is projected to remain approximately constant for many centuries following a complete cessation of emission. A large fraction of climate change is thus irreversible on a human timescale, except if net anthropogenic CO2 emissions were strongly negative over a sustained period."
In other words, even if all the world ran on carbon-free energy and deforestation ceased, the only way of lowering temperatures would be to devise a scheme for sucking hundreds of billions of tonnes of carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere, 115%-180% of that which was ever produced by man, over the next 1000 years.

In essence, it is claimed that we're doomed no matter what.

Fortunately, any small effect of CO2 on the climate is overwhelmed by natural variability, thus nature will do what it wants regardless of man's attempts to control the weather with the harmless, essential, trace gas CO2. And even if you think CO2 has a significant climate effect, the lifetime of CO2 in the atmosphere is only about 14 years, not the hundreds claimed by the highly flawed IPCC Bern model.

Reversing climate warming by artificial atmospheric carbon-dioxide removal: can a Holocene-like climate be restored?

DOI: 10.1002/2013GL057467
Abstract: Most climate modelling studies of future climate have focused on the affects of carbon emissions in the present century or the long-term fate of anthropogenically emitted carbon. However, after carbon emissions cease there may be a desire to return to a “safe" CO2 concentration within this millennium. Realistically this implies artificially removing CO 2 from the atmosphere. In this study experiments are conducted using the University of Victoria Earth system climate model forced with novel future scenarios to explore the reversibility of climate warming as a response to a gradual return to pre-industrial radiative forcing. Due to hysteresis in the permafrost carbon pool the quantity of carbon that must be removed from the atmosphere is larger than the quantity that was originally emitted (115–180% of original emissions). In all the reversibility simulations with a moderate climate sensitivity a climate resembling that of the Holocene can be restored by 3000 CE.

  1. That is completely at odds with the CO2 and CH4 levels of the previous interglacial of 110 kyr ago (the Eemian): average temperature ~2 K higher than today, circumpolar temperatures (Alaska, Siberia) 5-10 K higher than today. At least in summer no polar ice, large parts of Greenland ice gone and forests growing up to the Polar Ice Sea. Despite that: CO2 levels around 300 ppmv and CH4 levels around 700 ppbv. A lot lower than today and returning to lower levels when the temperature got colder.

One interesting point: when temperature (and CH4 levels) dropped, CO2 levels remained high for several thousand years. When a new minimum temperature was already reached, CO2 levels dropped some 40 ppmv, without measurable influence on temperature:

d18O in this graph is from N2O and is a proxy for land ice formation.

BTW, the removal of excess (12)CO2 is about 3 times slower than of 14CO2, because of the deep ocean exchanges, which returns the 14CO2/12CO2 ratio from ~1000 years ago, which is less than halve the 1960 bomb spike. That makes that the 14CO2 decay rate is much faster than of 12CO2. On the other hand, there is not the slightest indication that the deep oceans and vegetation are saturated, thus these absorb CO2 in ratio with atmospheric pressure above the equilibrium setpoint, that is a half life time of ~40 years.

  2. Where is the credible experiment that proves that the greenhouse gas effect exists? Based on thermodynamics by removing CO2 from the atmosphere the are temperatures will get warmer. The rate of heat transfer to space is greater the more CO2 there is in the atmosphere.
Besides there is some experiments that prove that the greenhouse gas effect does not exist.
There is an experiment that proves that the Greenhouse gas effect does not exist. This experiment which has been technologically reviewed by Ph.D physicists . CARBON DIOXIDE

There are two gases in the earth’s atmosphere without which living organisms could not exist.

Oxygen is the most abundant, 21% by volume, but without carbon dioxide, which is currently only about 0.04 percent (400ppm) by volume, both the oxygen itself, and most living organisms on earth could not exist at all.

This happened when the more complex of the two living cells (called “eukaryote”) evolved a process called a “chloroplast” some 3 billion years ago, which utilized a chemical called chlorophyll to capture energy from the sun and convert carbon dioxide and nitrogen into a range of chemical compounds and structural polymers by photosynthesis. These substances provide all the food required by the organisms not endowed with a chloroplast organelle in their cells.

This process also produced all of the oxygen in the atmosphere

The relative proportions of carbon dioxide and oxygen have varied very widely over the geological ages.

It will be seen that there is no correlation whatsoever between carbon dioxide concentration and the temperature at the earth’s surface.

During the latter part of the Carboniferous, the Permian and the first half of the Triassic period, 250-320 million years ago, carbon dioxide concentration was half what it is today but the temperature was 10ºC higher than today . Oxygen in the atmosphere fluctuated from 15 to 35% during this period

From the Cretaceous to the Eocene 35 to 100 million years ago, a high temperature went with declining carbon dioxide.

The theory that carbon dioxide concentration is related to the temperature of the earth’s surface is therefore wrong.
